Wishes from the Rector of the USATU Sergey Novikov on the Day of Cosmonautics

Dear teachers, staff and students!

I heartily congratulate you on Cosmonautics Day!

On April 12, 1961, the greatest historical event took place in our country - the Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on the Vostok-1 spacecraft for the first time in the world made an orbital flight around the planet Earth.

This day demonstrated to the whole world the level of scientific and technological achievements of Russia. Behind this and further domestic space breakthroughs is the enormous selfless work of scientists, researchers, designers and production workers. These highly professional people are capable of solving incredibly complex problems.

The scientists of the USATU, a university that took part in many Russian space programs, also laid the road to orbit.

The university began its path of research in the rocket and space industry in the 70s of the last century. Since 1987, work has been underway to process data from space observation systems for various applications.

As part of the implementation of the National Project "Education" in 2009, the scientific and educational microsatellite "UGATU-SAT" was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome.

Based on USATU, the Center for Receiving and Processing Data from Space Observation Systems was created. We can carry out remote sensing of the earth's surface, spatial analysis of the state and development of natural and man-made processes in the geological environment, atmosphere and hydrosphere occurring in the region.

University scientists have rich experience in designing electrical systems for spacecraft, which allows them to participate in modern projects and create high-quality world-class products. For example, an electric generator EG160 was developed for a space tug with a nuclear electric propulsion system. We also develop highly efficient space electric drives for spacecraft docking devices.

Together with the UEC, the university is mastering new “critical” Russian engine building technologies, such as friction welding, large-sized titanium casting, additive methods for creating parts, electromechanical energy converters, and creating digital twins of units and systems.

As a protection against impacts in outer space of high-speed micro particles on the surface of spacecraft, which can cause cracking and possible mechanical destruction of the elements as a whole, we have developed multilayer Nano crystalline coatings from antireflection and absorbing layers.

The university develops research in the field of high-speed data transmission in relation to the onboard communication lines of the ISS and ground stations. Developments are being carried out in three areas: optical mode-shift compensation, ultra-wideband communication and RoF technology.

In 2021, the youth laboratory "Sensor systems based on integrated photonics devices" was created on the basis of the world-class Eurasian REC.

Today we are participating in the work on the creation of electric drives for use as part of a complex of steering servo systems of a space complex with a reusable multifunctional cruise ship. Another ambitious task for the future is the creation and launch of a new CUBESAT satellite weighing up to 4 kg to organize and study new methods of inter-satellite data transmission.

USATU has been and remains a university of space orientation and galactic aspiration to the future.
