USATU scientists have developed modern medical implants


The project "Development of nanostructured titanium implants with bioactive and antibacterial composite coatings for dentistry and maxillofacial surgery" was successfully completed at USATU. For three years, employees of the Research Institute of Advanced Materials Physics and the Department of Theoretical Foundations of Electrical Engineering worked on it together with scientists from the National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli (India) with the support of the Russian Science Foundation (grant No. 19-49-02003).

Project manager, professor, doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, director of the Institute of Advanced Materials Physics of the USATU Ruslan Valiev says:

- Within the framework of the project, we developed a new generation of nanostructured titanium implants with higher strength, bioactivity and antibacterial properties for Osseo integration in dentistry and maxillofacial surgery, which will compete with imported counterparts in terms of the properties and quality of the material of future products. A specialty of this project is that it combines two promising developments at once - this is nanostructured titanium for medical applications, in particular for implants, and bioactive coatings applied to it.

Nanostructured commercially pure titanium (titanium with a special Nano-grained structure) has enhanced mechanical and bio functional properties. The superior strength of nanostructured titanium makes it possible to manufacture miniaturized implants for dentistry and maxillofacial surgery, providing a minimally invasive operation.

PEO coatings are an electrochemical oxidation process to form a thick oxide layer on light metals, including titanium, to improve corrosion resistance and wear resistance in corrosive environments. These coatings are especially promising for dental and maxillofacial implants, since they reduce the release of metal ions in body fluids and, consequently, the development of concomitant diseases.

A specialty of this project is the international cooperation with Indian colleagues - leading experts in the field of PEO coatings. In addition to scientific competencies, advanced laboratory and research equipment, they have extensive experience in the applied use of the results obtained, successfully interacting with industrial partners in India.

It is obvious that the research of our scientists has great potential for practical application. Now, a number of Russian companies - manufacturers of new-generation implants, in particular, a subsidiary of Skolkovo - LLC Narayama, are interested in their results and in the project itself. We are sure that soon the world will talk about Russian-made implants, and they will compete with global brands.
